On the north scarp of the hill there is a small wood backing onto Loader's orchard. It is here that we have recently completed fencing and are now opening up small areas within the wood for the sheep to graze. Cutting and burning the brambles and raking the cleared ground helps grasses and wildflowers to estalish strongly the following year. The sheep play their part eating any bramble re-growth and stimulating the grass growth. In the ancient orchard on the southern slope the clearance work is more of a challenge with eight foot high brambles to contend with. In the past our Berkshire pigs helped with this work. |
